Julian Gaskell & his Ragged Trousered Philanthropists

The headline act, it’s the legendary accordion, banjo, piano, guitar and violin trio from Falmouth. Let them take you on a riotous journey through 1930’s swing, cabaret, klezmer, folk, calypso punk, howling Americana, European agricultural ballads and of course, 19th century popular song.
“declamatory, vulpine vocals ranting and roaring his splendidly acrid, protestful lyrics over a glorious, urgent ramshackle garage blend of Balkan-Klezmerisms and French gypsy cafebilly” fRoots
They can be booked as a trio, but also gig as ‘Gaskell & Gibson’s Ragged Duo’ or Julian Gaskell can perform as a solo act on accordion, guitar (and piano by negotiation). As well as the usual eclectic mix of music, they are happy to skew a set to certain styles by request – for example an evening of 1930’s swing, a klezmer wedding, rabble rousing folk, a night of broadside bangers or just a selection skewed cover versions. Just let us know which styles you prefer us to play (or avoid!!). And yes, we are in Cornwall so we do take wedding bookings.
“quite exceptionally absurd. Made us think we were at some crazy European festival in the dark moon sun”
The Swing Riot

The Swing Riot play vintage tunes and songs from the 1930s and beyond, blasted out on guitar, clarinet, stompbox and vocals in the Django Reinhardt Hot Club style. Featuring Julian on vocals and guitar, and Dan (of Swingology fame) on Clarinet, this new project is already proving hugely popular, with a monthly residency at the Moth and Moon in Falmouth every 3rd Sunday of the month. Exceptionally entertaining and classy and available as a duo, with larger lineups by negotiation. Nice.
Julian Gaskell at the Piano

That’s nothing, you should hear me play piano
Julian also has a vast repertoire at the piano, ranging from boogie woogie, ragtime and early jazz to indie and pop ‘classics’, all played in his eccentric honky-tonk-professor style. He can play a mixture of vocal and instrumental music or just instrumental piano music as required.
Classy but still as chaotic as ever and featuring the famous touring upright piano which looks and sounds just like the real thing! Full details at Julian’s piano playing alter-ego ‘Leigh Delamere’ site…
